Promoting an understanding of Islam that recognises the principles of
justice, equality, freedom, and dignity within a democratic nation state

Introduction of Freedom of Religion
SIS has always maintained that Islam is a religion of compassion and mercy, and one which celebrates diversity and the rights and dignity of individuals and minorities. At the same time, we also acknowledge that Muslims from different contexts have interpreted Islamic sources according to specific social and historical circumstances.

Ultimately, we believe in an inclusive and just application of Allah’s command in the Qur’an, Surah al-Baqarah, verse 256: “Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects Evil and believes in God hath grasped the most trustworthy handhold, that never breaks. And God heareth and knoweth all things.”

It is within this framework that we defend freedom of religion in Malaysia. Nevertheless, laws and public policies have been made in the name of Islam that have eroded and jeopardised this fundamental liberty. Therefore, concerned Malaysians have the right to question and criticise such human-made laws and policies according to their conscience.
